Aerosols

Aerosols is an interactive, 3.5-meter-tall light and sound installation that visualizes real-time nanoscale aerosol data through kinetic LED wind chimes, allowing visitors to engage with the invisible dynamics of air quality and human impact via breath, movement, and wind.

Aerosols is a kinetic light and sound installation that makes the invisible visible—transforming real-time aerosol data into a mesmerizing play of light, motion, and air. Rising 3.5 meters tall, its curved LED wind chimes respond to nanoscale measurements of particle size, distribution, and human interaction, visualizing our impact on air quality through breath, movement, and wind.

As visitors move around or blow into nearby propellers, the installation shifts—LED patterns ripple, chimes spin, and an atmospheric soundscape responds, creating an immersive, multi-sensory experience. Blending nanometrology with public art, Aerosols turns scientific precision into a poetic reminder of our connection to the air we share.

Designed with sustainability in mind, the work minimizes energy use while raising awareness about environmental change—revealing how even the subtlest actions shape the atmosphere around us.

Aerosols features high-efficiency LED blades embedded in kinetic wind chimes, displaying real-time aerosol data through dynamic pixel animations. Light patterns shift, ripple, and rotate in response to nanoscale measurements and visitor interaction, creating a responsive visual language of air and movement. The LEDs translate invisible particles into fluid motion—an ever-changing, luminous expression of atmospheric presence.

Aerosols is constructed from stainless steel, aluminum, and custom-molded polycarbonate, forming a durable 3.5-meter-tall structure. Each unit includes curved kinetic wind chimes with embedded LED pixel blades, integrated sensors, and a data-driven control system. The installation is modular, weather-resistant, and suitable for public outdoor spaces, with options for solar or grid-connected low-energy operation.

Framework for Touring Water-Based Light Artworks

All touring artworks are conceived, created and realized by Malte Kebbel and his studio, Studio Malte Kebbel. Each project is engineered as a fully integrated system, designed for long-term public presence and maximum visual impact on water.

Process & Installation

  • Projects are tailored to each site with a comprehensive study of local conditions.

  • Floating structures are an integral part of every installation and provided under the artist’s supervision.

  • Local teams may assist, always under guidance from Studio Malte Kebbel to ensure technical precision, artistic integrity, and environmental responsibility.

Safety

  • All floating structures are built and maintained to meet professional safety standards.

  • Installation and operation are supervised to ensure the safety of all personnel and visitors, and the protection of the surrounding environment.
